Container City

The other day, Rosy took me to a going away party for a friend of hers, in Cholula – Puebla’s Burnaby. Okay, not really Puebla’s Burnaby… It’s only Puebla’s Burnaby because it’s right next door. Other than that, it’s totally different – I mean, it’s got its own ancient pyramid. And 365 churches.

However, like Burnaby, it’s got a big university. But, unlike Burnaby, this university means that Cholula is filled with all sorts of restaurants, bars, and clubs. Tons of them.

Well, the going away party was at a place called Siete Santos – Seven Saints – and, the music was terrible, and so were the wall murals.

Now, I’m sure your asking, why is he telling us about this horrible place? Well, it wasn’t so much the place, as it was the locale. It was in an area in Cholula, a block off the main strip, called Container City. And, it’s exactly how it sounds. The whole place was filled with shops, restaurants, and bars that are in containers – you know, shipping containers, those things that are on ships, and shipyards all around the world, filled with toys, computers, drugs, and people.

I’ve seen all sorts of articles and pictures of organizations using shipping containers for alternate uses, such as housing. But, I’d never actually seen anything in person – other than one thing at a design show, but that was just for show, not actual use.

It was amazing. Picture a small mall, made entirely of shipping containers, stacked in non-container fashion.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera with me, but, I’ll definitely be going back to take pictures and, once I do, I’ll share with you.

UPDATE: Here’s Container City
